About Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy – the art and science of using extracted plant essences (essential oils) to promote a balanced and healthy mind, body and spirit.
Aromatherapy is considered a holistic medicine and can be used as a preventative measure and a treatment for existing problems. When used properly, essential oils can support and correct the bodies systems. Allowing for a non-invasive, safer alternative to commonly used mainstream treatments.
The term “aromatherapie,” from which we get the english word “aromatherapy,” was first coined by Rene Maurice Gattefosse in 1928. Aromatherapy’s origins go back, perhaps as far as the history if mankind. Egyptians used rose oils as a perfume. Ancient soldiers used myrrh for wounds. Native American’s chewed on white willow bark for pain. The salicylic acid found in the bark is what gave us aspirin. The use of essential oils was not always a “strange” alternative therapy.
With the discovery of modern medicines and bacteria via microscope, western culture has forgotten the very useful holistic medicine that is Aromatherapy. In Europe, and now in the US, there are those of us whom will first turn to peppermint oil for a headache rather than an over the counter oral or topical medicine.
